Christian Service

May 13th

Attention to those with servicemen /women listed in our parish bulletin:

Do you have a loved one in the military serving our country? The children of our school and parish community would like to send letters to our servicemen and women to let them know how much we appreciate their service and to pray for them. If you have a serviceman or woman and would like to have them be included please contact Paula Dawson in Christian Service with their name, address at 248 682-4099 or email at paulaolr@comcast.net.

Christian Service is used as a model and a resource to enable the entire parish to put the social teaching of the Church into action. The Commission empowers members of the parish to fulfill the Church’s mission of love, justice, freedom and peace by communally responding to societal and individual needs.”

This is a group of parishioners who come together and build programs and events into our parish life that help us follow Christ’s example and administer care to those less fortunate than we. If this is something you would consider being a part of we invite you to come to our next Parish Leaders Night. Christian Service meets at 6:15pm prior to the Parish Leaders meeting which begins at 7pm.

SVDP and the Kroger Rewards Program

As a reminder the members of our St. Vincent de Paul Kroger Rewards Program it is time to re-enroll. All participants must sign up for the program in order to earn funds for our SVDP Conference during 2012-2013.  Click here to learn more and for details on how to enroll.

 Plant-A-Row

As you begin to plant your vegetable gardens, could you possibly plant an extra row or two to help us feed those in need? Over the summer as we begin harvesting we will have a basket in the social hall for all donations, and we will take them to Open Door food pantry of Waterford.

Commitment Sunday

Commitment Sunday is May 20th, please consider joining our Christian Service Commission. As many of our commission members are retiring we are in need of new members, please consider joining us. We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:15pm prior to the Parish Leaders Meeting.

South Oakland Shelter

SOS is a program to assist unfortunate persons who find themselves temporarily, without a home or shelter. The Orchard Lake Presbyterian Church houses 30 or so for one week in the summer. We are asked to supply volunteers to help in areas of food, transportation and act as host monitors. This program usually runs the first or second week in June.

Crossroads Soup Kitchen

OLR Christian Service feeds approximately 800 homeless and hungry people in Detroit at the Crossroads Soup Kitchen once a year usually in August. We work in two shifts, the first prepares the meal and the second serves the meal.

Society of St. Vincent De Paul

This is a group of volunteer parishioners who assist those who are experiencing financial difficulty. Two Vincentians are sent to assess the situation and make recommendations to the council, in our efforts to help them financially. Most of the help is financial and the funds come solely from donations. We have been blessed by the generosity of many donors which enable us to serve. Meetings held on the 1st. Tuesday each month.

Matchan Nutrition Center

Located in the gymnasium at St. Damien of Molokai church in Pontiac, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 to 1pm we serve hot lunches to as many as 250 people. Volunteers gather at 9am to prepare the meals to be served at 11:30am

Blood Drive

Christian Service hosts the American Red Cross Blood Drives 2 times a year. Volunteer opportunities include: calling previous donors for appointments, baking for the canteen, help with sign-ups after Mass, or work the Canteen during the Blood Drive.

Poinsettia Delivery

Christian Service delivers a Poinsettia plant to the family member who has lost a loved one whose funeral Mass was celebrated at our parish. This is a beautiful outreach ministry, and a memorial gift from our parish family.

Food Drive-Thank You!

Thank you once again to all who so generously donate to our monthly food collection, your donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you to Judy and Bill Spicer for transporting the food and to Mary Mager for sorting and packing the bags. We are so blessed to have such a supportive and generous parish.
