Father Richard Rakoczy, wonderful and dedicated priest, died on November 14, 2020 at the age of 86. He served the Church of the Archdiocese of Detroit extremely well.
He was ordained a priest in 1959. He had a number of pastoral assignments with his last one being the pastor of St. Perpetua Parish in Waterford where he served for 13 years until his retirement in June 2008. As a senior priest he lived in a home in our parish and we were beneficiaries of his continued priestly service. I personally benefited from his willingness to help here at the parish and I enjoyed our friendship and his interest in our parish.
All of us as parishioners were blessed to have him for Sunday Masses, weekday Masses and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. His ministry to our young people was very noteworthy as he always made himself available to provide the Sacrament of Reconciliation to our school aged children. Even though he was a senior priest he volunteered his time to do hospital chaplaincy at St. Joseph Hospital in Pontiac. He was active til the end. He loved the blessings of the priesthood and it showed for 61 years.
I will miss him. Everyone that knew him will miss him. We can be very confident that he already enjoys the rich reward of Heaven. Well done — he lived a very good life. We pray the Church will have many more faithful priests like him.
